A
journalist in the southern province of Adana is facing two years of
imprisonment after a prosecutor filed a criminal case against her for insulting
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on Facebook, the Doğan news agency reported on
Wednesday.
Mine
Bekiroğlu, a 28-year-old journalist who works for a local newspaper, was
detained by the Adana Police Department Cyber Crimes Unit on Feb. 15, 2014,
over claims that she insulted then-Prime Minister Erdoğan on Facebook.
Bekiroğlu's personal computer was seized for examination and she was released
pending trial after interrogation.
The
prosecutor of the case prepared an indictment against Bekiroğlu, seeking a
prison sentence of between one and two years. The Adana 6th Criminal Court of
Peace recently accepted the indictment. Bekiroğlu, who says her Facebook posts
about Erdoğan did not include an insult but only comments and criticism, is
expected to appear before the court soon.
